3 reasons terpenes are used in our cbd oils
What are Terpenes?
As CBD oil is still new to some people, we like to try and break down what goes into our products are why. We’ve touched on what CBD oil is, but today we want to talk Terpenes.
Before we dive into the depths of what terpenes are, we’ll start by telling you that you have probably come across them many many times before, without even realising.
In a nutshell, terpenes are ‘compounds’ found in hundreds of plants. They are basically responsible for the natural scent and flavour. Which is why they are often referred to as ‘aromatic compounds’.
For instance, terpenes create that soothing scent and relaxation that lavender gives. Or that fresh forest scent you smell when you walk past a garden of pine trees. Or even the smell of ‘real’ Christmas trees.
They’re also used in essential oils which many people burn in their homes, use for massages or drop in their baths.
A few of the more popular terpenes are ‘limonene’ which is found in the essential oil of lemons and limes and ‘linalool’ which is found in lavender.
Both of these terpenes and many more are found in the bud of cannabis.
And they are found in cannabis, and many other plants for different reasons. In some plants, the terpenes attract pollinators, while in other plants, they act as protection to repel predators such as insects or grazing animals.
So why do we use terpenes in our Aire products?
There are three reasons.
As mentioned previously, terpenes are responsible for scent. But they are also responsible for flavour. And that’s exactly why we put them in our CBD oil. To quite simply, give it a better scent and taste.
The third reason is more complex. And it’s called The Entourage Effect.
The Entourage Effect occurs when CBD (Cannabidiol) is ingested with other compounds from the cannabis plant, rather than in isolation. The belief is (and there is ongoing research into this) that by using more than just the singular aspect of the hemp plant.
Essentially, the effects of CBD are boosted by terpenes. Think about the definition of entourage. *Checks dictionary*
“A group of people who work with and for an important or famous person”.
So in this case, CBD is the VIP and the ‘group of people’ are the faithful sidekicks, the terpenes. They are both independent but they all work together to get the job done.
If you are new to CBD, we know there can be many questions surrounding the ingredients that go into CBD oils. And like with anything new, you might have questions about what is safe and legal. This is totally normal, and here at Aire we pride ourselves on making CBD oils that are completely natural, and using terpenes is just one of the ways we do that.
